Now, change the Width to 5” and the Height to 3” (if you are using 4”x6” or larger index cards, the larger number is always the width and the smaller number is the height). The preview in the box at the bottom of the menu should show a 3×5 card. You now have a perfectly typable, printable index card. Aug 08, 2018 Note: some people are reporting that they can no longer find the flashcard template we are recommending. If this is you, we've created two re-useable documents you can simply download and save as your own for flashcard creation. To make a set of flashcards in Microsoft 13's Word, select New and then type in flash card in the search box.
macosxhints' reader Joe M. sumbitted this hint via email. Although I haven't tested it myself, it could be quite useful if you have a need for printing to small notecards. Everything after this line is his original text... I recently needed to print some info on 3'x5' notecards using my HP LaserJet 4000. In the past, I've been able to print with margins less than 1/4' inch from the card's edge using MS Publisher 97 from Windows. But, for some reason, when printing from Word on OS X, the smallest margin I could actually get printed was more than 1/2' inch (a huge amount of lost real estate when printing on index cards).
After wasting a lot of 3x5 index cards, I tried using Keynote and it worked better than I hoped:
- Simply set the Keynote slide size to 500 w X 300 h.
- Place your content as close to the slide's edge as needed (how close to the edge ultimately depends on your printer).
- In Keynote's Page Setup, create a Custom Paper size measuring 3'x5'.
- Print away.

Index cards are useful for many things, from making flashcards to study for tests to printing recipes to keep in a nice, neat recipe box. You can print index cards from MS Word easier than you think. All you need is a stack of blank index cards and a printer that will print on them (most will these days).
Change Paper Size in Word
Open Word and select the Page Layout tab. Click Size and then the bottom link in the menu that appears that says More Paper Sizes.
A menu will pop up asking for parameters. In the first drop down menu (labeled Paper Size), choose Custom Size, which is the last selection in the list.
Now, change theWidth to 5” and the Height to 3” (if you are using 4”x6” or larger index cards, the larger number is always the width and the smaller number is the height).
The preview in the box at the bottom of the menu should show a 3×5 card. Click OK.
You now have a perfectly typable, printable index card. Now, set the print margins on the card from the default 1” to the Narrow .5” setting by clicking Margins at the top of your screen and then choosing the third one on the list that says Narrow.
You can now type anything you want on your index card template.
You can make new index cards in this same file by clicking the Insert tab, then Page Break.
Load a stack of index cards in your printer’s print tray (some printers require you to feed one at a time) and print your way to index card happiness. Enjoy!
